Wireless Access Point

To use Rovio or Spykee you will need a wireless access point or WAP for short.  This device acts as a wireless bridge between the Wi-Fi modem inside your Rovio or Spykee, creating a connection between it and your home network.  With that connection, your robot can now be assigned an IP address and become a full member of your home network, allowing it to communicate with the computers in your home and to be accessed from outside your home from a remote location.

Linksys WRT54G

The Linksys WRT54G is the wireless access point I use.  It has been reliable, has good range inside my home, and was easy to set up.  There may be better ones on the market, but the Linksys (now LinkSys-Cisco) is one of the most popular brands and you can find plenty of support on the Web via official and unofficial forums .  However, your needs may vary so below you will find some links to retailers that offer many different wireless access points for sale

If you want to know more about the topic mentioned in this warning follow the links. Make sure the the Wireless Access Point you buy supports 802.11b/g networks and that it supports WPA-PSK and/or WPA2 encryption. Configure your robot to use WPA-PSK and/or WPA2 encryption when talking to the Wireless Access Point. Do not use WEP encryption, a much weaker protocol, because it is easily cracked.
